SOCC Kairos Prison Ministry

A growing number of SOCC volunteers are serving with Karos Prision Minstiry. The people of Kairos are called by God to share the love of Christ with those impacted by incarceration. Kairos encourages believers from Christian backgrounds to be volunteers in this Christ-filled ministry. The Kairos Inside Program offered to prison residents presents the opportunity to receive God’s forgiveness through faith in Jesus Christ.

This is accomplished by sending in well-organized and well-trained volunteer teams of men and women from the communities surrounding an institution to present an introductory 3-day weekend, described as a short course in Christianity. This team of volunteers — both clergy and laypersons — works in cooperation with the Chaplain who carefully selects up to 42 inmates to attend. A well-organized follow up program is part of this ministry where inmates are encouraged to grow their faith and servant hood in a Christian community inside the prison.

You are invited to attend a closing to hear the attendees share how Christ's love, shared through Kairos, has changed their life.

If you'd like to know more about volutneering with Kairos Prison Ministry just ask us, we will be glad to share!! Please call: Michael Dyer, 812-322-1170 or Susan Dyer, 812-322-1154

SEVERAL PROJECTS NEEDING VOLUNTEERS

We have several upcoming projects in need of volunteers. Please read on -

1) A woman in Ellettsville who is wheelchair bound is in need of someone to build a ramp. She has secured the funds through St. Vincent DePaul so the project would include assessing the project, meeting someone from SVD at a lumberyard to purchase the materials, and to build the ramp. Contact Lyne at lbrown@socc.org or 334-0206. I need to find someone (or a group) for this project right away.

2) The flood relief project in Stinesville from a few weeks ago was cancelled due to weather. This project needs to be rescheduled but we are in need of a project manger. A date will be set when we have a leader. Monroe County Long Term Recovery personnel will be on site providing direction so the project manager will be serving as coordinator for SOCC volunteers. The project involves cutting up a tree and stacking the firewood and carrying debris to a dumpster. A Saturday morning would be enough to finish the project. . If you want to be notified of the date of this project or can lead this team let me (Lyne) know.

3) MASTER Provision Clothing Drive SORT & PACK is scheduled for Saturday, June 5 from 8 - 1. This is a HUGE project and we will need about 200 people to make it happen. We'll be in the gym so it is a great family project. Sign-up in the foyer on Sunday or at http://www.tfaforms.com/156858. Volunteers are also needed on Friday, June 4 at 5:00 to unload the trailer.

4) Templeton Elementary School - We've had several volunteers spend hours at Templeton helping to get their gardens cleared of weeds. We've made great progress but it's an ongoing project. There is a group for Bloomington Hospital working there on Friday June 4 from 5 - 7. Because of the Clothing Drive on Saturday June 5 we are not organizing a team for this project. However, if you are unable to help on Saturday you are invited to work at Templeton with the teachers and hospital volutneers pulling weeds. Show up at the school between 5 & 7pm.

5) Don't forget to clean out your closets and bring you clothes to the MASTER Provisions trailer this month or bring it with you on June 5 when you come to SORT & PACK.

Contact Lyne Brown for details on any of these proejcts at lbrown@socc.org or 334-0206.

TEMPLETON
Classroom
Early Morning Laps: Each morning at 8:40 after the children arrive and before class begins the children walk laps through the halls. This helps to awaken little minds for the day. Teachers stand in their doors and welcome the children as they pass by. Once each week SOCC volunteers will provide the teachers a thirty minute break, to get together and plan, by taking their place in the halls and presenting a simple lesson. Laps last 10 minutes and then volunteers will take a group of children to a classroom and teach a lesson until 9:15am. Volunteers arrive at the school promptly at 8:30 to receive the lesson. This could be done in pairs or small groups of 3 or 4 volunteers.

Reading Partners: 9:15 - 10:45 one day per week, Monday through Friday. Spend and hour once each week reading to a child or listening to a child read to you, depending on the grade level. Volunteers will meet with the same child each week, encouraging and building a relationship. Every child needs a cheerleader. One hour per week can change a life.

Free Friday Market
Free grocery shopping opportunity provided each Friday afternoon at Templeton for low income families. Approximately 50 to 70 families benefit from this market each week. SOCC will provide 5 - 10 volunteers from 1:00 -3:00 to setup and staff the store. Childcare crafts/reading, nutrition education, coupons, resource table, and healthy recipes on a budget are services we hope to incorporate into our time at the market. Volunteers may commit to one or more Friday’s each month. (Only open on Friday’s when school is in session.)

Garden Maintenance
Four outdoor areas have fallen into disrepair because of the lack of volunteers to maintain the gardens. A team from SOCC did extensive work on some of these areas during CareFest and we want to help keep them beautiful for the children and teachers to enjoy. This commitment will continue through the summer months so that the gardens can be properly maintained and readied for the return to school in the fall. The four gardens include vegetables (produce will be given away at the Free Friday Market when school is in session); wildflower and pond; picnic area; and perennial garden. There is some work on the wildflower garden that should be done this winter, weather permitting.
