Backpack Giveaway 2011

Sherwood Oaks is partnering with the Salvation Army and other local churches to give away backpacks and school supplies to MCCSC students on August 4th. SOCC is the host site for gathering the collections, sorting as well as the give away itself.

Throughout the month of July, SOCC will collect donations of school supplies such as paper, notebooks, pencils, pen, markers, crayons, rulers, glue sticks, etc. First, you can help by donating school supplies and bringing them to SOCC prior to August 1st.

The sorting and packing will take place Mon-Wed, August 1-3. Volunteer shifts are two hours, 9-11 am each day (a bit longer if needed). On the morning of Aug 4th we will then give away these packed backpacks to needy families. Many volunteers are needed on the 4th as we expect to give away several hundred backpacks to children. We will need hosts/escorts to walk children and families through the line and also needed are people who can do face painting, etc or monitor areas of entertainment while the families wait their turn.

You can sign up by completing this form Backpack Project 2011 or by emailing Nancy at nbarrow@socc.org.

Help Find Lauren Spierer

A request has come in for specialized volunteers in the Find Lauren Spierer search. Currently there is a need for volunteers with ATV’s or horses to help in the search. If you can help go to Findlauren.com and click on Specialized Volunteers or call 812-855-5304. (This is a different and more specific need than the daily teams which are being mobilized from Smallwood Apartments). Be prepared to provide the lead time you would need to mobilize as well as your availability.
